Traditional Chinese and Japanese acupuncture

The most familiar type of acupuncture to most people, Chinese and Japanese acupuncture techniques utilize needles to activate specific points of the body that affect the flow of energy, or “chi.”

Chinese acupuncture use stainless-steel needles about the width of one strand of hair and Japanese acupuncture uses needles that are even shorter and thinner than Chinese acupuncture needles.

Certain types of Chinese and Japanese acupuncture techniques are used by Dr. Cowan to help you reach optimal wellness:

Five-Element Acupuncture

Nature and humans are linked in a cyclical pattern of creation and destruction symbolized by these elements. This belief colors Chinese history, philosophy and medicine.

Five-element acupuncturists, like Dr. Cowan, take a holistic approach to medicine, focusing on the chi and the balance of the five elements in the body. They believe that restoring the balance of elements will cause other symptoms to cure themselves.

Local treatment

Local treatment focuses on alleviating a specific symptom or set of symptoms, such as smoking cessation.

Root treatment

A Japanese acupuncture philosophy, root treatment addresses a patient’s energy imbalance as a whole. Both root and local treatments can be performed at the same time.

Trigger Point Acupuncture

A direct style of acupuncture, specific trigger points are used to relieve muscular tightness caused by injuries or bad posture, for example. Tight muscles are identified and a thin needle is used to probe the area, causing the muscles to twitch involuntarily, relieving tightness and, usually, symptoms.

Auricular therapy (ear acupuncture)

Ear Acupuncture

This acupuncture method is performed solely on the 200 acupuncture points around the outer ear.

Because acupuncture points are connected by energy pathways, each point around the ear is linked to other points around the body. Dr. Cowan believes that auricular acupuncture can have all the benefits of traditional acupuncture because stimulating points around the ear affects specific pathways, which in turn stimulate the body’s flow of energy or chi.

Korean hand therapy acupuncture

Koran Hand Therapy

Similar to auricular acupuncture, Korean hand acupuncture utilizes what Tae-Woo Yoo, a Korean physician, calls micro-meridians, which link to traditional meridians that flow throughout the body.

Tae-Woo Yoo developed this form of acupuncture in 1971, mapping the micro-meridians of the hand and linking them to corresponding pathways. Treatment is isolated to the hand, but, as with auricular acupuncture, the overall effects are thought to be identical to traditional acupuncture performed on the body.

No-needle, microcurrent acupuncture

Microcurrent AcupunctureAt Acupuncture and Chiropractic Center of Pensacola, we use low-level laser therapy to treat a number of conditions by healing with light at the cellular level.

Low-level laser therapy delivers light energy units from infrared laser radiation, called photons, to damaged cells. The photons absorbed by the cells through laser therapy stimulate your cells’ the mitochondria to increase your cell energy and transform live cells from a state of illness to one of health.

Conditions that may be appropriate for low-level laser therapy include

  • Acute and Chronic Pain
  • Arthritis
  • Back Pain
  • Bursitis
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Chondromalacia patellae
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Heel spurs

Cosmetic Acupuncture FAQ

What results can I expect from cosmetic acupuncture?

Treatment protocols and results vary on an individual basis, but generally speaking, we recommend 10-20 treatments once or twice a week.

After you have had the initial treatments, all you need are periodic treatments for maintenance every 6 to 8 weeks.

You can also take an additional treatment in preparation for a particular event like a wedding or reunion.

How long do the effects of cosmetic acupuncture last?

The effect of cosmetic acupuncture will last from two to five years and sometimes up to 10 years—just as long as a surgical face lift will last. Results depend heavily on lifestyle, food, smoking, use of alcohol, etc.

How should I dress for the treatment?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing such as a tank top or t-shirt and yoga pants, sweatpants, shorts, or capris.

Acupuncture points for Mei Zen cosmetic acupuncture are located all over the body, particularly between the wrists and elbow, the ankles and the knees, and the stomach. You will be the most comfortable if your clothing can be easily rolled up to your elbows and knees.

Do I need to do anything special between treatments?

  • Drink plenty of water to flush out toxins from the lymphatic system. This is important!
  • Do not get a sunburn.
  • Do not use any strong chemical peels or get any oblative lasers while undergoing cosmetic acupuncture.
