Treatment Plan and Adjustment

The first step in receiving treatment at our clinic is to meet with Dr. Robert Cowan, DC CAP DACBN.

ConsultationWhen you meet, Dr. Cowan will review your paperwork, provide an examination, and outline a treatment plan and methods used, frequency of appointments, costs, helpful tips, and a general description of your personal healing process.

Depending on your specific condition, you might be a candidate to receive an adjustment the day of your initial appointment, or your diagnosis may require a series of visits. Chiropractic, like most manual therapies, relies on repeated interventions over time to achieve maximum effect.

If you have any questions at all about the treatment plan, be sure to ask! Our goal is for you to understand the steps necessary for you to experience improvement.

The spinal adjustment

The chiropractic adjustment is a safe, natural, noninvasive procedure used by the chiropractor to restore and improve health. Learning the art of adjusting is a skill that requires years of study and practice.

Chiropractic doctors are the only health care professionals trained to deliver the chiropractic adjustment.

In basic terms, the spinal adjustment or spinal manipulation refers to the process in which the doctor of chiropractic skillfully applies controlled force into one or more subluxated vertebrae of the spine. (A “subluxated” vertebra is one in which the vertebra has lost its proper position or motionin the spine.)

The adjustment is also frequently used in the pelvic region to normalize the sacroiliac joints. The adjustment is usually delivered using the hands or through the use of a specialized mechanical tool.

When are spinal adjustments given?

Dr. Cowan uses  uses several tests and procedures to determine which, if any, vertebrae are subluxated. If subluxations are found, immediate correction is generally indicated. Since much like dental cavities, subluxations are not always painful during the initial stages, we recommend that people who are not experiencing back or neck discomfort to receive periodic spinal checkups to stave off future issues

What do spinal adjustments do?

Correcting vertebral subluxations reduces pain and inflammation, reduces muscle spasm and tension, normalizes spinal biomechanics, and most importantly, can remove nerve irritation and interference, which can improve overall health and wellness of the individual.

The non-spinal adjustment

Like the joints of the spine, joints in the extremities can also become misaligned as well.

Dr. Cowan, with over 25 years of chiropractic experience, is adept at utilizing chiropractic adjustive techniques to restore and enhance extremity joint functioning. Chiropractic care increase the life of your joints and keep wear and tear to a minimum.
