Proper Treatment for Your Unique Needs

Chiropractic Adjustments

The following chiropractic techniques are the methods Dr. Cowan uses to adjust the spine to reduce the tension and pain syndromes associated with spinal segmental dysfunction. In addition, Dr. Cowan looks at all joints of the body—not just the spine—to ensure you receive the proper treatment protocol.

Diversified Technique or Full-Spine Specific (FSS)

FSS is the most commonly used of all chiropractic techniques and is the one most familiar to patients.

The diversified manipulation/adjustment entails a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust that usually results in a cavitation of a joint (the “popping” noise often associated with a chiropractic manipulation/adjustment).

As the name implies, Diversified Technique the can be used to treat many of the joints in the body.

Extremity Manipulating/Adjusting

This is the application of chiropractic manipulation/adjustment to joints other than those of the spine such as the shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand/finger, hip, knee, ankle/foot/toe.

Extremity manipulation and adjustment can be used to treat carpal tunnel syndrome and gait or posture-related problems.

Thompson Technique

The Thompson Technique utilizes a specific style of adjusting table called the “segmental drop table.” This table enhances the force imparted towards area to be adjusted.

The segmental drop system, first pioneered by Dr. J. Clay Thompson in the 1950s, takes advantage of the spine’s inherent design of the joints in order to move the spinal segment in the direction that will improve the motion of the segment with the segments above and below.

The majority of the spinal adjusting utilizing the Thompson Technique has the patient lying face down on the segmental drop table to allow for proper spinal adjusting techniques to be used.

Cox Flexion/Distraction

Cox Flexion/Distraction is a specific chiropractic technique primarily utilized to treat lumbar disc herniations, non-disc spinal disorders, and to increase mobility of spinal joints.

The technique uses mechanical and hands-on manipulation/adjustment and utilizes a special table where the spine is tractioned and flexed forward.

Cox Flexion/Distraction is perfect for conditions that don’t allow for a lot of force. Degenerative or arthritic joints and “hot” lumbar discs respond quite well to the small oscillatory movements used.

Arthro Stim Instrumentation

This is a hand-held, electrical spring-loaded instrument with a manipulation/adjustment protocol.

Instead of the manipulating/adjusting forces being delivered by hand, force is generated with the small appliance that delivers a lighter variable thrust—a much quicker thrust than can be delivered by hand.

Arthro Stim can be used as a primary treatment protocol for all patients or a selective method for patients who may not desire manual manipulation/adjustment or where manual manipulation/adjustment may be contraindicated.

Sacro OccipitalTechnique (SOT)

SOT is a specific chiropractic technique that uses triangular-shaped blocks usually placed under the pelvis of the prone patient to treat problems identified in the low back. In addition, low force, slow pressure types of manipulations/adjustments may be used to address joint problems identified in the skull.

SOT may be used as an exclusive treatment technique or as an adjunct method of patient management, depending on your individual needs.
